Nearly a century old, the first Excelsior Apple Day festival took place in 1935. Unfortunately, Apple Day was canceled during 1941 and would remain nothing more than a memory for 44 years. It was revived again as a two-day celebration in 1985. Since then, Excelsior Apple Day has undergone various changes to its length and program. Today, it is a single-day celebration that continues to draw thousands and remains a favorite festival among locals and visitors alike.

Lake Minnetonka 4th of July Celebration

Holidays are full of shared traditions that bring communities closer together. For more than 130 years, people have gathered for the day-long Lake Minnetonka 4th of July Celebration. More than 200,000 people are estimated to participate in the waterfront activities centered at Commons Park in downtown Excelsior.

• The day kicks off bright and early at 7:30 a.m. with the Firecracker Run. Choose from 5K and 10K timed races or a one-mile fun run. Routes begin at Excelsior Elementary and end at the Commons. Early registration fees, which include a t-shirt, are $30 for the one mile run and $42 for the longer races.
  
  
• Kids have plenty to do, starting with a sand sculpture contest on Excelsior Beach at 9 a.m. Since it's not the 4th of July without a parade, kids are invited to get on their bikes, scooters, and wagons at 11 a.m. and join the parade down Water Street. Afterward, they can enjoy a petting zoo until 1 p.m.
  
  
• As day moves into evening, musical entertainment begins at 8 p.m. with a performance by the Red Devils, a rock band offshoot of the 34th Infantry Division Red Bull Band. Just before 10 p.m., the Red Bull Band will perform the National Anthem as the event concludes with a spectacular fireworks show over Lake Minnetonka.

10,000 Lakes Concours d'Elegance

During summer, many find it hard to resist the call of open roads and waterways. Check out some of the finest classic automobiles, motorcycles, and watercraft at the seventh annual 10,000 Lakes Concours d'Elegance, taking place Sunday, July 28 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

• In the Concours d'Elegance, which translates to "competition of elegance," vehicles in the three different categories are judged on "style, elegance, and beauty." Prizes are also awarded to the top three participants dressed in period clothing to match their vehicle.

Walk the grounds to make sure that exterior lighting, sprinkler equipment, foliage, and other items have not been removed. At the same time, you can also see if recent weather like rain or strong winds has damaged the exterior.
   
   
2. Confirm that all requested repairs have been completed properly.
   Keep your inspection summary on-hand as you review all of the agreed-upon areas that needed repairs. There should be copies of all receipts and warranties for each job, and each area should be fully functional. Do not sign off on a home if a repair is still in progress or hasn't been fixed to your standards.
   
   
3. Double check that everything still works.
   It's wise to check that everything in the home still works. This involves doing more than verifying that all appliances and plumbing are functioning. You should check all electrical sources to confirm that the current is present. Open, close, and lock all doors and windows to make sure the home is safely secured as well.
    
4. Search all storage spaces to discover anything that was left behind.
   Unfortunately, a seller may purposely or accidentally leave behind supplies or trash in various locations around the home. You'll need to do more than check only the closets, garage, and exterior sheds. By inspecting crawlspaces, attics, cupboards, and drawers throughout the house, you can ensure that hazardous or dangerous materials like paint cans, insulation, or other unwanted items are responsibly discarded before you move in.
    
5. Search for anything that may be missing.
   Make sure you perform your inspection with your contract in hand. This purchase agreement will list everything that is and is not included with the home sale. Verify that each item listed is not only present but that it is also in the same condition as it was agreed upon. If blinds were part of the agreement but were damaged when the seller moved out, you'll want these to be repaired or replaced before you finalize the contract.  
   
   
6. Check top to bottom for pests, mold, and other damage.
   Inspect each room from floor to ceiling making sure there is no damage or presence of pests, rodents, mold, mildew, or water collection. Spot check the floor, walls, and ceiling for water spots, especially in the bathrooms and kitchen. Inspect and test all pieces of plumbing to see if there are any water leaks. If you see any droppings, bite marks, or signs of pests, immediately notify your agent.
   
   
7. Question anything and everything with seller and real estate agent.
   Finally, make a list of questions or areas of the home you'd like to know about in more detail, such as fixtures or appliances that have been repaired. Your agent will be happy to help you get all of the information you need so you can be confident about your home purchase.

A number of homes for sale in Excelsior feature cozy fireplaces perfect for chilly winter nights. There's nothing better than sitting next to the fireplace, hot cocoa in hand. But while you're staying warm and cozy make sure to stay safe, too! Our realtors share some tips on staying safe while you enjoy your fireplace this winter.

1. Make sure to have your chimney inspected and cleaned.
   Do this before you decide to start building fires. Soot and creosote are deposited along the inside of the chimney can create a fire hazard. The chimney cap and damper should be free of debris and working properly. If you use your fireplace frequently, it may need cleaning more than once a year.
   
   
2. Make any needed repairs.
   The flue lining is generally inspected as part of the chimney cleaning process. If it is cracked, heat can escape and ignite a fire elsewhere in the house. You will need to repair it before using the fireplace.
   
   
3. Use a fireplace screen.
   A screen prevents embers from escaping the fireplace and landing on carpet or anything else that can catch fire.
   
   
4. Don't use flammable liquids to start a fire in your fireplace.
   Gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid, and other chemicals are dangerous to use for this purpose. They will make the fire too hot, can cause a huge flare up, and release toxic or flammable fumes.
   
   
5. Burn only dried, seasoned firewood.
   Don't use paper, boxes, or garbage. Also, don't use wet or moldy wood, painted or treated wood, or plywood. Most of these items produce toxic fumes when burned or burn too hot, increasing the risk of fire.
   
   
6. Keep the area around your fireplace clear.
   Make sure anything that could catch fire is at least 3 feet away from the fireplace.
   
   
7. Make sure you have working smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and a carbon monoxide detector.
   You need them anyway, but even more so when you have a fireplace.
   
   
8. Make sure the fire is completely out before you go to bed or leave the house.
   It sounds obvious, but it's easy to get distracted. A quick double check is worth it.

But if you're serious about buying a home now, you'll need a pre-approval. A pre-approval is a deeper dive into your financial situation. Here are the steps you'll need to take.
