Spring Home Maintenance-Homes by Joel

Spring is the time when people start thinking about the to-do lists that they've been compiling all winter. Spring is also the time when many homeowners put their homes on the market. If you're one of them, that to-do list just became even more important. These home maintenance tasks that should be at the top of your list if you'are thinking about selling your Excelsior home.

  • Clean Siding
Cleaning the siding on your house can be as simple as some soapy water and a long-handled brush. Cleaning off the grime that has accumulated during the year will do wonders in making your home look more inviting. If you think you need a heavy-duty treatment, try renting a power washer. If you're going to use a power washer, though, take heed, as it uses water that is under tremendous pressure. If you aren't careful, you can do more harm than good.

  • Wash and Repair Woodwork
Whether it's the deck, the fence, or the porch, the woodwork should get some attention. Once winter is over, you may find that your deck needs to be cleaned, the fence needs a few new boards, or the porch could use a fresh coat of paint. Each of these jobs will go a long way toward improving your home's curb appeal and making it more attractive.

  • Trim Trees and Bushes
It's likely that by the time the weather is nice enough to go outside for an extended period, your greenery will have begun to look a bit "shaggy" and need a trim. Trimming shrubbery is something prospective buyers are most likely to notice if it isn't done.

  • Give Your Windows Some Love
Much like the siding, the windows also collect grime. Give them a thorough scrubbing inside and out for a clear view. While you are at it, clean out window wells, repair screens and make sure caulking around the windows is in good shape.

  • Check the Roof
Once the snow has melted and the roof is visible again, take note of its appearance. Are there any curled or missing shingles? Is there any debris sitting on the roof? Leaves, twigs, and branches can prevent water from draining properly from the roof, resulting in leaks. Warmer weather is the perfect time to protect your investment.

  • Consider Small Upgrades
As long as you're going to be outside anyway, why not improve your home's appearance with some small upgrades? Things you might consider include new light fixtures, new hardware on the front door, or even a new mailbox. They're inexpensive updates that can improve your home's overall appeal.

  • Clean Out the Fireplace
Once the cold weather has passed and you're done using your fireplace for the season, clean it out. Sweep away ashes and even take a sponge, soap, and water to the area. After it's clean, put a display inside of it, such as logs or plants, to keep the space from looking empty and to cover up any scorch marks you couldn't scrub away.

If you're thinking about selling your Excelsior home this spring, the return of warmer weather gives you the perfect opportunity to tackle your to-do list. When you're ready to list your home, contact Homes by Joel.
